Japanese Moriage Vase

This vase or umbrella stand (16 inches) has painted flowers on both sides. When was the piece produced and what can you tell me about it?
--S.C., WASHINGTON COURT HOUSE, OHIO

Note that the vase has brightly colored flowers on one side and plain white flowers on the other. This is a double-sided vase, meant to be placed on the floor with the plain face to the wall. It was made in Japan in the 1920s, and has a moriage, or raised enamel decoration. These mass-produced vases were fairly common household items. However, the large size of this one makes it more desirable.

Valued at: $250
