Satsuma Vase

My uncle gave me this vase (16 inches) and it has an indistinguishable mark. He served in the Spanish-American War and World Wars I and II. Where was it made and is it valuable?
--A.B., DICKSON, TENN.

Based on your family history, it is possible that your uncle bought this vase in Japan; it is an example of an early-20th-century Satsuma vase, characterized by a buff-colored or creamy beige ground, often with a crackle decoration applied over the glaze. Blue, red, green, orange, and gold were popular colors, and subjects included women, samurai (soldiers), flowers, and birds.

Valued at: $750
